Pack’s 2nd Scrimmage
The Wolfpack had their 2nd scrimmage of the summer Saturday again closed to the media, however Coach O’Brien released some stats. According to ACC Now the running backs and defense dominated the day. The quarterbacks struggled with interceptions and Freshman Russell Wilson was the only one to throw a touchdown.
Not sure if this is a good sign or not. It is no secret our running backs are among the best in the Conference and it shouldn’t be a surprise they ran over our defense.
Junior tailback Andre Brown rushed for 100 yards on 12 carries with a 26-yard touchdown. Junior Toney Baker carried nine times for 45 yards while Jamelle Eugene had 13 carries for 23 yards.
The defense seemed to steal the quarterbacks thunder even with four fighting for the starting spot. The defense came away with four interceptions and only allowed 1 passing touchdown. Is this good or bad? Heck if I know! Our quarterback play has been our weak link ever since the famous #17 left. And this year will not be any different, especially without the help of Anthony Hill who was our leading receiver in 2006 and will miss the 2007 season due to a knee injury.
Another hole the Pack looks to fill this season is in the kicking game. For the last couple of years, the kicking game isn’t something we have had to worry about with the services of John Deraney who handled all of the kicking duties. In the scrimmage two kickers showed what they can do.
Freshman kicker Josh Czajkowski made both of his field goal attempts from 20 and 27 yards. Walk-on Steven Hauschka make a 36-yarder.
There is no doubt September 1st will be interesting. We have the talent to compete with anyone in the conference. The only question is how everyone will come together on offense. I don’t think we will see a team full of individuals when the season kicks off, but a team of teammates without the silly penalties we have seen in the past.
