NC State…..the weekend
You’ve heard of ESPN the weekend….well, now I present NC State…the Weekend! In what was one of the best collective regular season weekends that the Pack has had in quite some time NC State piled up big victories and dominating performances all around.
First, and most obvious, the men’s basketball victory over the Hokies. I defer to Jeff for his excellent analysis, but quite simply it was 40 minutes of domination. Just when I start to wonder if a winning season is possible, the Pack does something great to renew the faith. But that was just the icing on the cake for the Wolfpack this weekend.
In women’s basketball, Friday night saw the floor be renamed Kay Yow Court, and saw the Wolfpack Women dominate the #2 Tar Heels, going up by as much as 26 in the first half, and holding on for the first victory over UNC since 2003. They followed that up with a win over Virginia Tech, and are one win away from finishing in a third place tie in the ACC. Pretty impressive when the top three in the ACC go 1,2,6 in the national rankings. More important, these two wins lock up an NCAA berth with the Pack looking at a 5 or 6 seed, and hosting the first two rounds in the RBC Center.
In baseball, the Pack Nine collected another sweep, running their record to 5-0. Andrew Brackman picked up win #2 as did Eric Surkamp. In softball, State went 4-1 in Gainesville, FL, winning the Cox classic and collected two victories over #19 Florida. Great wins for our softball team who is now 7-2 (and look for an entry on both teams later in the week)
Not to be outdone, our “olympic” sports also got it done. Gymnastics put up a top 25 level score (194.6) to postion themselves for the NCAAs, women’s tennis knocked off two ranked opponents, wrestling dominated Virginia Tech 41-6, and even Rifle won the SEARC tournament, which I believe is their version of the ACC title.
So congratulations to all of the Wolfpack athletes for their weekend performance. It’s a great time to be runnin’ with the wolves.
